The work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is recognized worldwide as pivotal to the development of modern architectural design. The qualities of what is known as ‘Organic Architecture’ developed by Wright, includes the blurring between exterior and interior, the new uses of materials and technologies, and the explicit responses to the natural settings of his buildings. Wright sought out the underlying structure in the American landscape, discovering and enhancing its geometric elements. His buildings would not only echo the landscape but also shape and unify it. Wright envisioned nothing less than a new architecture, shaped in response to his own interpretation of American ideals and accessible to all American. His vision, “to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for living in, and to give rhyme, reason, and meaning to life” is carried on through the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the first and only modern American architecture to be designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
