Aline Barnsdall "Hollyhock" House
Olive Hill, Los Angeles, California
1919-1923
Hollyhock House was built for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall and is Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles project. Wright referred to the innovative style he developed while designing Hollyhock, California Romanza, using the musical term meaning "freedom to make one's own form".
The house takes its name from Aline Barnsdall’s favorite flower. At her request, abstract hollyhocks were incorporated in decorative elements throughout the house. Aline Barnsdall was a philanthropist and art collector who never actually lived in the house, instead she used it as an arts center and entertaining venue.
The Hollyhock House is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
